Fenghuang ("Phoenix") Ancient Town is about a three-hour drive from Zhangjiajie, and it rewards visitors who stay one night: after dark, the stilt houses along the Tuojiang River light up and reflect in the water. A common plan is Zhangjiajie for two days, then Fenghuang for one night and morning — three days and two nights for the full loop.
What to do
By day, walk the old stone lanes between the stilt houses, visit Shen Congwen's former residence (the writer who made the town famous in Border Town) and cross the covered Rainbow Bridge. By night, walk along either bank of the Tuojiang River: the lanterns, the reflections and the low music from riverside bars make it one of China's most photographed old-town scenes. The viewpoint platforms give the widest panorama of the river bend.
What to eat
Two local dishes are worth trying: blood sausage duck (xiexueya), a hearty duck dish with rice-blood sausage, and sour fish (suanyu), cooked with pickled vegetables. Riverside restaurants serve both, and a simple night snack with a view is part of the experience.
Where to stay
Stay one night in a guesthouse on the riverbank, ideally with a balcony over the water. Night views beat a day trip: the town is quieter after the day visitors leave, and the morning light on the river is a second show before breakfast.
How to combine it with Zhangjiajie
A comfortable three-day route: day one in the national forest park (guide here), day two on Tianmen Mountain (guide here) then drive to Fenghuang in the late afternoon, day three in the old town before heading back. A private car makes this simple because the Zhangjiajie-Fenghuang route is a direct three-hour drive.
Quick questions
Is one day enough? Enough for the highlights, but the night is the best part — staying one night changes the experience completely.
When is the best season? Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; the town is pleasant year-round, with summer evenings lively and winter quiet.
Can I do it without a car? Yes, buses and trains connect the two cities, but a private car lets you leave Zhangjiajie in the afternoon and arrive before dark.
