Zhangjiajie's main attractions — Wulingyuan (the national forest park) and Tianmen Mountain — use real-name, time-slotted entry. You book a specific entry window, and the name and document on the booking must match the person at the gate. Most booking problems come from not understanding this rule, or from buying through unofficial resellers.

How entry works

  • Real-name booking: every visitor's passport is registered at purchase.
  • Time slot: you choose a morning or afternoon entry window; arriving outside it can mean waiting until the next slot.
  • Document check: carry the same passport used for booking. Scanned tickets are accepted at the gate.

What the base ticket does not include

This is the most common surprise. A base park ticket usually covers the entrance only; eco-buses, cable cars and the Bailong Elevator can be priced separately. Always read the inclusions before paying, and keep the breakdown so there are no surprises at the counter. Some packages bundle them; some do not.

Tianmen Mountain's sectioned rule

Tianmen Mountain splits its ticket into sections — the mountain-top zone and the lower cable/bus route. Visitors who do not check the section list can end up buying a duplicate. Ask what each section covers, and match the sections to your actual route. See our Tianmen Mountain guide for the route.

Common traps to avoid

  • "No-queue fast passes" from resellers: usually a mark-up on the same official ticket, sometimes a resold ticket that fails at the gate.
  • Unclear refund rules: weather closures happen in the mountains. Confirm before buying whether a ticket can be moved or refunded if the scenic area closes.
  • Packages that hide costs: low headline prices that add eco-bus, cable car and elevator fees on site.

Peak season

In July and August, slots sell out in advance. Book your entry windows as early as possible, and give yourself one flexible afternoon in case the weather closes a cable car. September and October are cooler and less crowded than summer.
