Most of Zhangjiajie's magic is inside this one park: the sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. Plan two to three days here, not one. The park is a 4,810-hectare area with five distinct scenic zones, and its ticket is valid for four days with multiple entries.

How the park is organised

The national forest park covers the Wulingyuan area and is divided into five main scenic zones: Yuanjiajie (the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint), Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream (Jinbianxi) and Huangshizhai.

A simple way to think about it: the upper zone is Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain + Yangjiajie, connected by park eco-buses and cable cars. The lower valley is Golden Whip Stream, Huangshizhai and the Ten-Mile Gallery, best explored on foot and by shuttle.

A realistic 2-3 day plan

  • Day 1 (upper zone): Yuanjiajie in the morning, then Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie. Eco-buses link the stops, so walking is limited.
  • Day 2 (lower valley): Walk Golden Whip Stream (a flat 7.5 km trail) and finish with Huangshizhai or the Ten-Mile Gallery.
  • Day 3 (optional): revisit a zone you loved, or add Baofeng Lake, the Grand Canyon glass bridge or Tianmen Mountain.

Tickets and entry rules

The forest park ticket is valid for four consecutive days and allows multiple entries, so you do not need to rush. Entry is real-name and time-slotted: you book a morning or afternoon entry window and show your passport at the gate. Buy from the official channel and bring the same document you used to book.

Note that the base ticket does not always include everything: park eco-buses, cable cars and the Bailong Elevator are often priced separately. Always check what is included before you buy. More detail in our ticket booking guide.

Getting around inside

Private cars are not allowed inside the park. You move by eco-bus between zones, and by cable car where the terrain is steep. In peak season, the east gate queue can be long; the south and west gates are usually quieter. A local driver who knows the park gates saves real time: they can drop you at one gate and pick you up at the exit, which self-driving visitors cannot do because cars cannot enter the park.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Autumn brings clearer skies and warmer colour on the peaks. Summer is lush but busy and rainy; pack a light raincoat. Winter can be beautiful after snow, but some upper trails may close in icy weather, so first-time visitors usually prefer autumn. More in our season and planning notes.

Quick questions

Is the forest park tiring for seniors or children? The upper zone relies on cable cars and eco-buses, so walking is moderate. Golden Whip Stream is flat and can be walked in sections, with exits along the way.

Is food available inside? There are simple shops near the cable car stations, but prices are higher than in town. Carry some snacks and eat a proper meal after you come down.

Can I combine it with other sights? Yes. Many visitors add the Grand Canyon glass bridge (guide here) or Fenghuang Ancient Town (guide here).
